Plot:
• Early 215, Firelizards begin to vanish.
• Mid 215, Dragons begin to fall ill and die. The few remaining Firelizards banished.
• Dragons and Riders fled in Bonded pairs to the South, hoping to survive the Plague.
• 220 Summer, Nirinath and her rider began to call together the remaining Dragons and Riders.
• Barely 200 dragon bonded pairs survived, Nirinath the last remaining Gold of Pern
• Katila Weyr was established on the south side of the Southern Mountains
• Green dragons went Flight crazy. Many women riders fell pregnant.
• Nirinath did not rise until 227, after much fear and worrying;
• It had been seven years since Katila's founding and 12 since the break out of the Plague.
• A clutch of 17 was laid, no queen egg.
• Realization that no one under the age of 5 at Katila was without a dragon.
• Agreement was reached, to keep Katila hidden from the Pernese.
• Search sensitive dragons stole potential candidates between ages 20 and 30, approximately.
• All potential candidates were of Jr. Journeyman ranking or higher.
• 15 eggs hatched, leaving 2 duds.
• 3 Weyrlings were lost in training; 12 graduated
• Breaths are being held, waiting for Nirinath to take to the skies again.
It went largely unnoticed at first, as Firelizards - slowly at first, and then with growing speed - began to vanish. Their fickle tendencies were blamed in the beginning, for Firelizards are often known to come and go at will, but as time passed and the months began to slide by, and those that had vanished never returned, and more and more began to drop away, questions were raised.
It was when the first dragon became sick, in the middle of 215, that answers began to appear in response to the questions of the Pernese. A sickness was destroying the flying lizards of Pern, and the dragons, once it had mutated, were not safe.
It would start as a stomach ache, sharp, ripping pain through the dragons intestines that would leave the beast grounded. Further symptoms were a constantly running nose, fever and chills, followed by wracking coughs, that would ultimately destroy the dragons respiratory system -- if they hadn't already gone Between.
None of those who became ill, survived.
Fearing for the lives of their dragons, and their own mental health, firelizards - what pathetic few were still surviving - were banished forever. Riders, mounted on beasts as yet appearing healthy, fled to the far expanse of the Southern Continent, where they lived in lonely groups of dragon and rider, fearful to rejoin others in case someone passed on the illness.
So it was, for five years.
As summer of 220 arrived, the lone surviving Queen rider, and her beast, began gathering up those who were scattered across the Southern lands. A Weyr was established, with those who formed it originating from all over the Northern Continent, prior weyr prejudices forgotten, a new Weyr was built on the southside of the Southern Mountains, which were used as a barrier facing the coastline.
With the Resurrection of a socail life, the Green dragons took to the sky, making up for five years without Flight, but the Queen, Nirinath, remained grounded, and fear rippled slowly through the small Weyr; they had some 200 survivors of Pern, and Nirinath was their only golden beauty.
Relief came seven years later, in 227, when Nirinath finally took to the skies, and was caught by Bronze Xankaath. Shortly thereafter, a clutch of 17 was laid. There was no golden egg, however, and more than a few of the population groaned and worried.
There was, however, a more immediate concern for the Weyr - the realization that those of Katila Weyr were already bonded to a dragon, and those few who weren't were Katila Babies, and as such, not nearly old enough to Impress... A gathering was held, and a decision reached.
Search-sensitive dragons left the Weyr, travelling to the Northern Continent, where they snooped out likely looking candidates between the ages of approximately 20 and 30 - and, because of their age, were also Journeymen and women.
They were snatched up in the dead of night, and brought to Katila Wery - some kicking and screaming, some awestruck.
None of them ever to return to Pern at large, for Katila Weyr had agreed to keep their presence a secret from the Pernese population, indefinitely.
Fifteen of Nirinath's After Plague Clutch hatched and Impressed, with two duds left upon the Sands. As the year 230 rolls around, Nirinath's first clutch graduated with minimal casualties, now numbering at 12 fresh dragonriders, and anticipation is high as Katila Weyr holds its breath, waiting for her to take to the skies once more.
